About Zellie's
Zellie’s crafts mints and gum that support oral health by harnessing the proven benefits of xylitol. Founded in 2004 by dentist and oral health advocate Dr. Ellie Phillips, our mission is to provide effective, effortless solutions that make daily oral care simple and enjoyable. Sweetened with high-grade xylitol and available in a variety of bold flavors, Zellie’s products offer a natural, delicious way to help protect teeth and address common dental concerns.
Family- and women-owned, Zellie’s is headquartered in Austin, Texas. Today, Dr. Ellie’s daughter, Chrissie Jarrell, leads our passionate team, carrying forward her mother’s vision of a world where every smile is vibrant, confident, and free from the burdens of dental issues.
How to Use Zellie's
Steps
1. Finish eating or drinking (including water)
2. Enjoy 2 grams of xylitol mints or gum (2 pieces of gum or 4 mints)
3. For gum, chew no more than 10 minutes for maximum oral health benefits
4. Wait at least 30 minutes – preferably 60-90 minutes – before resuming drinking or eating
5. Repeat throughout day, aiming for 3-5 times
Mouth Resting
Dr. Ellie recommends "mouth resting," where you have xylitol and take a break from drinking or eating for 60-90 minutes, which allows time for the xylitol to stimulate mineral-rich saliva to help strengthen the enamel, balance oral pH, loosen unwanted bacteria from the surface of the tooth, and promote healthy bacteria to multiply. The goal is to have 6-10 grams of xylitol daily followed by "mouth resting."
Studies Recommend 6-10 Grams
Daily Studies recommend 6-10 grams daily to achieve the maximum dental benefits of xylitol. For people with oral health issues, the more frequency and dosage, the more benefits for your teeth. However, studies show that at 10 grams or more per day, you will reach a plateau effect, where increased amounts do not make your mouth any healthier.

About Xylitol (pronounced ZIE-lih-tol)
• Five-carbon molecular structure or pentose sugar with supportive benefits for our bodies and oral health.
• Often inaccurately confused with other “sugar alternatives” that are 6-carbon sugar alcohols.
• Unique structure and behavior are different from other sugars.
• Approximately 15 grams created daily by the human body as a product of our metabolism.
• In granular form, it looks and tastes like ordinary table sugar with a slightly fruitier flavor.
• Found in many plant fibers, including fruits (such as strawberries, raspberries, plums, and blackberries), vegetables (such as corn), and hardwood trees (such as birch).
• Low-glycemic index of 7 (on scale of 0-100) with minimal effect on blood sugar levels.
Xylitol Benefits
Xylitol has been used for centuries worldwide because of its numerous oral and general health benefits. Fortunately, xylitol has become more widely known and used in modern societies because scientific studies have been published about xylitol's positive impact and because so many people now see firsthand the benefits associated with its use.
• Supports oral health
• Helps clean, protect, and strengthen teeth
• Helps maintain healthy mouth pH
• Moistens your mouth
• Freshens breath
How Xylitol Works in the Mouth
1. Weakens and removes unwanted bacteria
a. Plaque bacteria mistake xylitol for sugar so they consume it but cannot process it.
b. They lose energy, stop multiplying, stop producing acids, and wash away.
2. Feeds healthy bacteria
a. A healthy mouth contains hundreds of beneficial bacteria that can metabolize xylitol.
b. Xylitol helps these good bacteria thrive and balance the oral microbiome.
3. Stimulates mineral-rich saliva
a. Xylitol draws moisture into the mouth and activates saliva flow.
b. Saliva is critical because it:
i. Rebuilds and strengthens enamel
ii. Neutralizes acids
Xylitol and Pet Safety
Yes, xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and potentially other animals, so keep Zellie’s products well out of pets’ reach. For more details on xylitol toxicity in pets, please visit Xylitol Toxicity in Pets.
